Chippendale 1775-1790

American Chippendale furniture tends to follow Georgian forms, whereas English Chippendale uses a variety of Rococo, Chinese and gothic designs, along with the Georgian classical form. Some Queen Anne influence can be found with the cabriole leg design, the pad foot now replaced with the claw and ball foot. Ogee bracket feet or straight bracket feet and inset corner columns are found in chests. Original to America was block front construction and shell carving on chest and secretary top drawers. Mahogany was the primary choice of wood in much of the Chippendale furniture, especially around Newport, RI with furniture built by the Townsend-Goddard family of cabinetmakers. However, beautiful examples in walnut, cherry, and maple have also been found. The elegant simple lines of the Chippendale furniture make it a favorite today between craftsmen and customers alike.
