Hepplewhite 1790-1810

In the late 1700s Chippendale still influenced America’s furniture style. However, Hepplewhite brought certain changes easily recognized. Extensive inlay work and flaring bracket feet typical of Hepplewhite were used on chests with Chippendale style broken and scrolled pediments. Square tapered legs were used on drop leaf tables and sideboards. The Pembroke table with oval and inlaid leaves was now a very popular table. Banquet tables, consisting of a large gate leg drop leaf table in the center accented with semi-round ends that could be used as end tables with the flat side against the wall, when not in use, were also very popular. Many people today love the simplistic lines of the square tapered leg but choose to omit much, if not all, of the fancy inlay work in their Hepplewhite style furniture. Either way, Hepplewhite furniture design is well worth considering in your choice of furniture today.
